'Xanadu' Skates to South Korea 2008

Tuesday, December 11, 2007; Posted: 11:44 AM - by BWW News Desk

The producers of Xanadu , the new smash musical currently playing at Broadway's Helen Hayes Theatre, announced today that they have finalized a six-figure deal giving Tin Tin Entertainment the exclusive South Korean local-language rights to the show for two years. A production in Seoul is set to open in 2008. Broadway Asia's Simone Genatt and Adam Gentle brokered the deal.

Douglas Carter Beane has written the book for Xanadu based on the film of the same name. The score, by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, includes the hits, "Magic," "Xanadu," "All Over the World" and "I'm Alive" -- all top 20 Billboard hits. Lynne wrote and produced all of the music of Electric Light Orchestra ( E.L.O). Farrar was also responsible for most of the hits that were performed by Olivia Newton-John in the 1970's. Christopher Ashley directs with choreography by Dan Knechtges.

"Taking audiences back to 1980 California, this hilarious new musical follows the beautiful Kira, who travels to earth to inspire a struggling young artist named Sonny. A vision in leg warmers and wind- swept hair, she helps this hunky painter find his voice, discover true love and build the world's first roller disco (not necessarily in that order)," explain press notes.

The Broadway production of Xanadu is produced by Robert Ahrens , Tara Smith, B. Swibel, Cari Smulyan , Dan Vickery, Sara Murchison and Dale Smith. For tickets and more information www.xanaduonbroadway.com

42nd Street Opens in Tianjin, CHINA!

42nd Street Audience Testimonial!

I just got back from seeing the "42nd Street" Asian Tour in Tianjin, China.. and it was a remarkable experience.

I'm not going to comment much on the performers or the actual show, because I don't have a program (our taxi got lost, we got there just in time! no time for program buying) but it was a great show, performance-wise. But I wanted to talk a little about the audience's reaction to it.
I'm in Tianjin this year studying abroad, and when my roommate and I heard about '42nd Street' coming to town, we were really excited about tickets. Being a double major when I'm home, Chinese and Theater, the lack of theater and dance here had been making me sad.
Before the performance, the man in charge of the company that brought the tour to China (Nederlander company, I think?) along with a Chinese interpreter came out to talk to the audience a bit; mostly to set up the background of what exactly 42nd Street is and what was going on in the US in the 1930s. He prefaced this, though, by asking the audience to raise their hand if this was the first time they had ever seen a Broadway Musical. About 90% of the audience raised their hand.
It was so interesting to be watching a show with an audience who had literally never seen this kind of show before. They were absolutely amazed by the tap dancing - I have never seen an audience anywhere react so strongly to dance numbers. Maybe I just see poor audiences, but these people applauded everything. I suppose, people who see live theater all the time just assume people will be able to dance, but being with an audience who is watching tap for the first time was a great experience. I know the Chinese word for tap dance, but when I tell people that I like to 'tita wu' when talking about my hobbies, a lot look at me strangely - so tap is not something well-known here. There were a few little girls up in the balcony with me during intermission trying to tap dance in the aisles, and it was adorable.
I was in the back row of the balcony, and the applause that erupted after the final encore in the curtain call was probably the most deafening I've ever heard in a theater. The orchestra also got tremendous, tremendous applause, and after the show many people were crowded around the orchestra pit trying to get a look, or say hello.
The show was subtitled in Chinese with screens on the side of the stage in front of the proscenium, and they were more or less very faithful to the dialogue, sometimes making some bizarre changes with lyrics, but they did a good job translating jokes.
When I was in high school and doing more community theater than homework, before we opened every show our director would tell us that we were performing this show for exactly to people: the person seeing live theater for the first time, and the person seeing live theater for their last. Having an entire theater full of people seeing musical theater for the first time was just such an amazing experience. It reminded me how theater really is magic, and absolutely not something that should be taken for granted.

CHINA.ORG.CN - Young People in Shanghai Love Musicals

Young People in Shanghai Love Musicals

China has a burgeoning market for musicals and there are many people who show a talent for musicals. Broadway Asia Entertainment will surely find many musical talents in China and give them a chance to perform in world musical stage in future, said Zha Wei, event organizer in Shanghai.

From Lés Miserables to Mamma Mia, from musical comedy I Love You to authentic French musical Le Petit Prince, it seems that watching musicals has become a trendy thing to do for young people in Shanghai.

If you walk on the street and happen to ask several fashionably dressed young people what is the hottest word in Shanghai now, they will give you the same answer: "That's Mamma Mia!"

On July 6, Mamma Mia, the hottest play that now sweeps the global musical world, made its debut in Shanghai. The play soon aroused Shanghai people's enthusiasm for musicals. The organizer of the event said that on Aug 2 Mamma Mia would be staged in the city for the last day. From the very first day when the play was staged in Shanghai, the phone for booking the tickets had kept ringing. Last week, all the tickets for the show were sold out. It can be told for sure now that the one-month performance will be profitable.

This year, many musicals were staged in Shanghai, including the hit 42nd Street produced by Broadway Asia Entertainment, Troikasia and Nederlander New Century. Many were considered as famous in musical circle. The box offices for these musical shows were extremely good.
